"Charity looking to award grants to community sports and leisure clubs in the borough of Great Yarmouth

A local Great Yarmouth charity is offering grants of up to £500 each for sports and leisure clubs in the area to help promote the benefits of active lifestyles for health and social issues. The Great Yarmouth Sport and Leisure Trust is a registered charity dedicated to improving the lives of people in the area.

The recent Active Lives Survey found that 25.7 per cent of the UK's population are considered to be inactive, doing less than 30 minutes of physical activity per week. As well as the obvious benefits for our physical health, sports promote teamwork, unity and confidence as well as boosting positivity and improving our mental wellbeing. The Great Yarmouth Sport and Leisure Trust is therefore determined to enable sports and leisure clubs to reach more people and make a bigger impact in their communities.

Graham Plant, Chairman said: "As a registered charity, our purpose is to benefit the public in the borough of Great Yarmouth. We would like to award grants to allow more people in the community access to leisure activities such as swimming, and sports clubs or activities such as cycling, grassroots football clubs and gymnastics for example. Maybe you're a club that needs new equipment. Perhaps you're a coach or a teacher wanting to start a group. We're very keen to help groups who are historically not participating in sport to get involved."

These grants will be used to support clubs, organisations or individuals who want to encourage club and sports development in the community. Applicants must provide at least 30% match funding, the grants are given four times a year in September, November, February and May (applications need to be received at least a month prior to the award month).

Sports clubs and voluntary groups can apply for up to £500 in funding. Only applications from the Borough of Great Yarmouth will be considered. Any application that is actively encouraging inactive groups to become active will be gratefully received, including those in disadvantaged groups."

Run with your community

park run great yarmouth.jpg

parkrun is an inclusive event run entirely by volunteers who are all parkrunners themselves. It is not a race and anyone is welcome to come to walk, run, volunteer or spectate. With over 1.7 MILLION runners in the UK, it is a great way to start the weekend.

It is simple to register and all parkruns are free. The organisers are keen to make it accessible to all members of the community including those with disabilities and long term health conditions.

If you live in the borough of Great Yarmouth, your local parkruns are every Saturday at 9am at Gorleston Cliffs and also at Fritton Lake.

Get active! If you haven't registered before, you can register here - see you there!

FA says only one in three pitches at grassroots level adequate

Great Yarmouth Sports Funding

The FA is considering selling Wembley Stadium to release funds to support community football, which we think is a great idea. But how is your pitch looking? Did you know we can help football teams in the borough of Great Yarmouth with seed funding of up to £500?

There are 21,000 grassroots clubs, 50 county FAs, 25,000 schools and 330 local authorities which are catered for by the FA and, along with the finding that only one in three grassroots pitches are of adequate quality, the FA's written evidence also highlights:

  • 150,000 matches were called off last season due to poor facilities
  • One in six matches are called off due to poor pitch quality
  • 33 of 50 county FAs are without their own 3G pitch
  • Cancelled matches account for the equivalent of 5,000,000 playing opportunities lost this year because of poor facilities
  • There are half the number of 3G pitches in England than there are in Germany

"The word for grassroots football is 'crisis,'" said Kenny Saunders, who runs pressure group Save Grassroots Football. Read more about how the FA support grass roots football here

Can you help disabled people get active in Great Yarmouth and the Surrounds?

img_9021.jpg.JPG

Research by Activity Alliance has shown that disabled people are twice as likely to be inactive as non-disabled people, but 70 per cent of disabled people want to be more active.

Psychological barriers play the biggest role in preventing disabled people from taking part in sports, however seven out of ten disabled people WANT to be more active. One in five people in Britain have an impairment - that's 11.5m disabled people.

Having an active lifestyle can have many advantages. Regular physical exercise provides social benefits and mental health improvements, including:

  • Increased independence
  • A reduction in stress
  • A boost in self esteem
  • Enhanced co-ordination
  • Better strengthened balance

We can't find many opportunities in our area on the Active Alliance website - can you set up a club or a group in the borough of Great Yarmouth?

With Disability Awareness Day around the corner (July 15), now is the time to apply for your funding - the application form is here. Please get involved!

The Sport and Recreation Alliance's volunteer opportunity finder aims to easily connect volunteers to events and clubs they can help at, and has been launched in UK Volunteers' Week which runs from 1-7 June.

"Sport and recreation volunteers play a big part in getting the nation more active, improving wellbeing and building communities," says Alliance chief executive Emma Boggis. "Our new volunteer opportunity finder will encourage involvement with a simple and easy way to find activities and make a real difference, including for those in the under-represented 25-34 age range. By getting this process right, we can make a happier and healthier nation while building stronger communities across the UK."
