How a Grant is Keeping the JGI Bowls Group Rolling for Years to Come

The JGI Bowls Group in Belton, Great Yarmouth, has been a vital part of the local community for over six years, offering weekly Short Mat Bowls sessions that bring people together. Thanks to a new Great Yarmouth Sport & Leisure Trust grant, the group is now set to continue providing this much-loved activity for years to come.

Grant awarded to JGI Bowls Group

Supporting the Future of Short Mat Bowls in Belton

The grant will replace two essential bowling mats, a storage roller, and other equipment that had seen years of use. With these upgrades, the JGI Bowls Group can ensure its members enjoy a high-quality experience every Monday afternoon.

For the group’s 20+ members, mostly aged over 65, this investment means their weekly meetups remain enjoyable and accessible. Whether it’s rolling bowls or rolling laughter, these sessions are about more than the sport—they’re about fostering friendships and staying active.

A Welcoming, Non-Competitive Space

The JGI Bowls Group focuses on the social aspect of the game. Members meet for two hours every Monday to enjoy each other’s company, with no pressure to compete. With two annual lunches—one in summer and another at Christmas—the club is as much about making memories as it is about bowling.

Why Short Mat Bowls Matters

Short Mat Bowls is an accessible, low-impact sport that’s perfect for people of all abilities. It’s easy to learn and can be played in a variety of indoor spaces, making it ideal for groups like the JGI Bowls Group. By replacing essential equipment, the grant ensures this activity remains available to everyone in the Belton, Great Yarmouth and Gorleston areas.

With this grant, the JGI Bowls Group isn’t just maintaining equipment—it’s investing in the social and physical wellbeing of its members and ensuring the joy of Short Mat Bowls continues for years to come.
